انڈیا مختلف مذاہب، نسلوں اور زبانوں کا ملک ہے۔ روایتی طور پر ہندوستانی مذہبی ہوتے ہیں اور مذہب کی ریت رواج پر عمل کرتے ہیں۔ انڈیا میں مذاہب کا ایک اہم پہلو ذات پات کا نظام بھی ہے۔ روایتی مذاہب میں ذات پات کے سبب دلت اور اقتصادی طور پر کمزور طبقوں کو وہ مقام نہیں مل پاتا جو نام نہاد اعلیٰ طبقے کے لوگوں کو ملتا ہے۔
بابا گرومیت رام رحیم جیسے سادھؤں کی مقبولیت کا سبب یہی ہے کہ وہ ان دبے کچلے لوگوں کو نہ صرف وقار اور عزت دیتے ہیں بلکہ ان کی مدد بھی کرتے ہیں۔ بابا گرومیت رام رحیم کے مریدوں کی تعداد کروڑوں میں بتائی جاتی ہے۔

انڈیا میں صوفی طرز کے بابوں اور سادھو سنتوں کی روایت بڑی پرانی ہے لیکن گذشتہ تیس چالیس برس میں بابوں کی روایت روحانیت سے نکل کر معیشت پر مرکوز ہونے لگی ہے۔ پورے ملک میں بابوں کا سلسلہ پھیلا ہوا ہے۔ ذات پات، معاشرتی پیچیدگیوں اور جدید دور کی مشکلات نے ان مذہبی رہنماؤں کو انتہائی مقبول بنا دیا ہے۔ ان کے کروڑوں پیروکار ہوتے ہیں۔ جب یہ نکلتے ہیں تو ان کے آگے پیچھے سینکڑوں گاڑیوں کا قافلہ چلتا ہے۔ ان میں سے کئی ایسے ہیں جن کے اپنے ٹی وی چینل بھی ہیں۔ کچھ رہنما روزانہ ٹی وی پر وعظ بھی دیتے ہیں۔
لیکن بابوں کو اس طرح کی کامیابی ہرگز نہ ملتی اگر انھیں سیاسی پشت پناہی حاصل نہ ہوتی۔ حکمراں سیاسی جماعتیں ان کی مقبولیت اور اثر رسوخ کی بنیاد پر انھیں بڑی بڑی زمینیں الاٹ کرتی ہیں اور ان کی فلاحی سکیموں اور پروگراموں کے لیے بڑے بڑے چندے سرکاری خزانے سے دیتی ہیں۔ چونکہ ان بابوں کے کروڑوں لوگ مرید ہوتے ہیں اس لیے سیاسی رہنما ان سے قربت حاصل کرنے کی کوشش کرتے ہیں۔ سیاسی جماعتیں انتخابات کے وقت اپنی مدد کے عوض ان بابوں سے اپنے حق میں حمایت حاصل کرتی ہیں۔ گذشتہ پارلیمانی انتخابات میں بی جے پی کی جیت میں کئی بابوں نے اہم کردار ادا کیا تھا۔

مذہبی بابوں کی مقبولیت کا اندازہ ان کے آشرموں کی تعداد اور ان کی زمینوں کی ملکیت سے ہوتا ہے۔ یوگا گرو بابا رام دیو تو ایک قدم آگے نکل گئے۔ وہ دواؤں سے لے کر چاول، تیل، کریم ٹوتھ پیسٹ اور شیمپو تک کی فیکٹری لگا چکے ہیں اور کئی ہزار کروڑ کے منافعے میں چل رہے ہیں۔ بابا آشارام اور ان کے بیٹے بھی کچھ عرصے تک ملک کے انتہائی مقبول بابوں میں تھے۔ ان کے آشرم اور مراکز شمالی ہندوستان کے ہر کونے میں پھیلے ہوئے تھے۔ لیکن سیاسی رہنماؤں سے ٹکرانے کے بعد ان کا زوال شروع ہو گیا اور ان دنوں کئی ریپ کے معاملوں میں جیل میں ہیں۔
پنجاب میں بھی ایک بابا ہیں جن کے انتقال کے بعد ان کے حامیوں نے ان کی لاش کی ممی بنا رکھاہوا ہے۔ انھیں یقین ہے کہ بابا دوبارہ زندہ ہوں گے۔ بابا کی پراپرٹی کئی ہزار کروڑ روپے میں بتائی جاتی ہے۔

بابا گرمیت رام رحیم اپنی طرز کے انوکھے بابا ہیں۔ وہ قدرے کم عمر ہیں۔ چمکدار کپڑے پہنتے ہیں۔ پاپ گانے گاتے ہیں، فلموں میں ایکٹنگ کرتے ہیں، بائیک چلاتے ہیں اور ساتھ میں وعظ بھی دیتے ہیں۔ ان کا کہنا ہے کہ وہ سبھی مذاہب کا احترام کرتے ہیں اور ان کا پیغام انسانیت اور بھائی چارے کا ہے۔ وہ اپنی دو خاتون مریدوں کا ریپ کرنے کے مجرم پائے گئے ہیں۔
ان سبھی بابوں کے کچھ پہلو مشترک ہیں۔ ان سبھی کا گہرا تعلق سیاست سے ہے۔ سیاسی حمایت سے ہی ان کا عروج اور زوال ہوتا ہے۔ کسی تجزیہ کار نے کہا تھا کہ یہ بابے روحانیت اور عرش کی بات کرتے ہیں لیکن ان کی نظر عرش پر کم اور فرش پر زیادہ ہوتی ہے۔ یہ بڑی بڑی زمینوں اور املاک کے مالک ہیں۔ سیاست میں وہ کافی متحرک ہیں۔ معیشت اور سیاست میں ان کی بڑھتی ہوئی سرگرمیاں ہی ان کے زوال کا سبب بنتی ہیں۔

ROHTAK: An Indian court on Monday sentenced a controversial spiritual leader to 10 years in prison for raping two of his devotees, days after his followers went on a rampage that left 38 dead.
The riots broke out on Friday when Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, 50, was convicted of raping the two women at the sprawling headquarters of his hugely popular Dera Sacha Sauda sect in the northern state of Haryana.
A lawyer for the victims in the case, which dates back to 1999, confirmed Monday’s sentence and said there could be dozens more cases of abuse involving women at the sect.
“We will file two appeals shortly. One for enhancement of the punishment and another for further investigation into the case,” Utsav Singh Bains told AFP by phone.
“We believe there are at least 48 more victims who were sexually abused and who may have been killed or are too scared to come out and testify against Ram Rahim.”
Bains said the prosecution wanted the court to jail Singh for life — the maximum possible sentence for rape in India — given that there were two victims and one was a minor.
Authorities have imposed a security clampdown on the city of Rohtak where Singh is being held due to fears of a repeat of Friday’s violence, when tens of thousands of his supporters set fire to cars and clashed with security forces.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the violence but his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which is also in power in Haryana, was criticised for failing to anticipate the riots.
Police were taking no chances Monday in Rohtak, where mobile internet has been cut, roads barricaded with barbed wire and soldiers deployed to man checkpoints.
‘GURU IN BLING’
More than 100 of Singh’s senior loyalists have been placed in detention as a precautionary measure, said Rohtak police chief Navdeep Singh Virk.
He said his officers would use “whatever force is required” against the guru’s devotees should they again resort to violence.
“If the situation so arises that (we) need to use firearms, my officers have complete authority,” the police chief told broadcaster NDTV.
A judge was flown in by helicopter to sentence the spiritual leader, known as the “guru in bling” for his penchant for bejewelled costumes.
The rape case was brought after an anonymous letter was sent to then-prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2002, accusing Singh of repeatedly raping the sender and several other women in the sect.
A judge asked the federal Central Bureau of Investigation to look into the accusations, but it took years to trace the alleged victims and it was not until 2007 that two women came forward and filed charges.
Singh also stood trial for conspiracy over the murder in 2002 of a journalist investigating the rape allegations. He denied the charge and the case is ongoing.
On Friday the journalist’s son Anshul Chhatrapati welcomed the sentence on Singh, saying the court had “sent a message that any charlatan, however big he may be, is not above the law”.
Critics say Haryana authorities grossly underestimated the risk posed by the army of devotees after violent protests in many parts of the northern state on Friday.
Over the weekend thousands of followers congregated in the spiritual headquarters of his sect at Sirsa, despite calls from police and troops for them to disperse.
Devotees eventually began trickling out one by one from the compound Sunday, under the supervision of hundreds of soldiers and riot police.
Modi said Sunday it was “natural to be worried” as the violence even briefly reached the capital New Delhi.
“Violence is not acceptable in the nation, in any form,” he said in his monthly radio address.
“Those who take law in their hands or take to violence will not be spared, whoever they are.”
